About the Role 
Grey Matters is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mid to Senior Level Software Developer with a deep knowledge of Java and C# languages to join our team. The successful candidate is expected to have a breadth of knowledge of the Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) architecture and TAK development kit, Android, Cursor on Target and best practices for secure systems. Our developer will utilize their passion and expertise to develop and enhance vital applications for the Department of Defense and State Government entities. 

Grey Matters develops and maintains both our user interface software as well as the messaging, edge software, and networking layer. Our UI software is used for DoD and State Government situational awareness of commercial and defense systems as well as local, close-proximity command and control.  

Grey Matters is looking for a JAVA ATAK Developer with ATAK plugin development experience for our UI/UX development team. This developer will work with the UI/UX team to build out Grey Matters’ various DoD and Government platforms. This developer will be responsible for supporting several Grey Matters programs that utilize TAK components. Much of the Grey Matters software stack is written in JAVA and some of the code running C# for windows-based applications.  This developer will work to design, document, implement, and test a robust interface to our heterogeneous platforms that leverages best-practices in web and remote communications, networking and data transfer, and lightweight and robust API definitions to allow a group of disparate operators to maintain awareness of the environment to achieve desired mission outcomes.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

You will work and collaborate on teams staffed with a project manager, product owner, and developers/engineers within an Agile DevSecOps environment. As a crucial member of our team, you will also be expected to interface with client representatives.  

Our team member will: 

  • Design, develop, and maintain software applications within the Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) architecture. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems engineers and military / government stakeholders, to understand requirements and implement solutions. 

  • Develop and integrate features for TAK components (CIV, GOV, and MIL protocols), such as Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), Windows-based Tactical Awareness Kit (WinTAK/TAKX), TAK Server, and TAK Gateway. 

  • Implement geospatial data processing, map rendering, and communication protocols within the TAK framework. 

  • Ensure software meets security and performance requirements for military applications. 

  • Participate in testing, debugging, and troubleshooting of TAK software to identify and resolve issues. 

  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in geospatial technologies to enhance TAK capabilities. 

  • Develop and maintain TAK plugins, contributing to the full software development life cycle. 

  • Support the documentation of the TAK APIs and the continual alignment and integration with third party systems. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and deliver high-quality software solutions. 

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior developers within the team. 

  • Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards. 

  • Interface with stakeholders to understand DoD/GOV processes and contribute to the development of tailored solutions. 

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices. 

  • Conduct developer unit testing to ensure functional requirements are met. 

  • Participate in peer code reviews and collaborate with SQA Testers on bug reports and fixes. 

  • Provide oversight, guidance, and mentorship to the development team ensuring code quality and adherence to coding standards. 

  • Engage in daily scrum calls to report progress, identify obstacles, and find collaborative solutions. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • 5+ years of professional experience in software development, with a strong focus on  

  • Java or Kotlin for Android application development (for ATAK). 

  • C# for Windows-based application development (for WinTAK). 

  • Java for server-side development (for TAK Server, TAK Gateway and TAKX). 

  • Experience with mobile development on Android platforms / Android Studio (for ATAK) and Windows environments (for WinTAK). 

  • Proven experience in the full software development life cycle, from requirements analysis to design, coding, testing, and deployment. 

  • Familiarity with geospatial libraries and APIs. 

  • Familiarity with SAFe Agile methodology. 

  • Knowledge of communication protocols and data exchange mechanisms within military / government command and control systems (Cursor on Target / Protobuf). 

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment. 

  • Ability to obtain security clearance. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience working dynamically in a paired programming environment. 

  • Familiarity with GitHub / GovCloud - AWS. 

  • Familiarity with networking protocols and general Linux network configurations (VLANs, iptables, routing protocols, broadcast/multicast, etc.). 

  • Familiarity with military processes and experience supporting U.S. government programs. 

  • Aptitude for assisting in technical requirement elaboration with business stakeholders. 

  • Active Top-Secret Security clearance.

Salary Range:  $125,000 - $190,000 + 25% SEP
